Koufonisia Geography

Koufonisia is a small cluster of islands that geographically belongs to the Small Cyclades. Located between Naxos and Amorgos, Koufonisia is mainly divided into Αno (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Koufonisi, which are separated by a narrow, 200-meter-long straight. With an overall surface of 5.7 square kilometers, Ano Koufonisi is the biggest of the two islets and is actually the only one to be still inhabited today. Most of its residents engage in animal husbandry and fishing, so several quaint fishing boats can be seen moored at the small port of Chora, the capital and only settlement on the island.

The geography of Koufonisia is generally flat, with the highest peak being Prophet Elias at an altitude of 114 meters above sea level. Around the shores of Ano Koufonisi, visitors will find a series of dreamy beaches that stand out for their soft golden sand and mesmerizing turquoise waters. The most popular ones, such as Pori, Finikas and Platia Pounda, are located on the southern and the eastern side of the island, while the western part of the coast is more rocky and secluded.

One of the distinguishing features of Koufonisia is the great number of sea caves that dot the coastline. In fact, it was precisely this that gave them their very name, as the caves made them seem hollow (“koufios” in Greek) and rendered them a great hideout for pirates over the previous centuries. Today, the Ksylompatis Caves, in particular, are one of the greatest attractions on the island of Ano Koufonisi, and they are easily accessible both by boat from Chora and by swimming from the nearby Pori Beach.

Reachable only by boat from Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi also boasts pristine beaches with crystalline waters. Hiking around its barren landscape, travelers may still see remnants from the island’s ancient history, as well as a picturesque chapel standing on top of some ancient ruins.

Close to Koufonisia, there is also another uninhabited island, Keros, which is renowned for its archaeological interest, as it used to house one of the most significant sanctuaries of the early Cycladic civilization.
