Having provided the island’s main source of income for centuries, fishing is an integral part of life in Koufonisia. Thus, it is little wonder why a very special day, the Fisherman’s Festival, has been dedicated to it, keeping the local customs alive. Organized by the Koufonisian Cultural Association, it takes place annually in the marina of Chora on the last Saturday of May, though preparations begin way earlier with the participation of all the inhabitants.
The festival starts at sunset and involves a wide variety of delicious fish mezes being served to all guests for free, along with copious quantities of rakomelo and excellent Cycladic wine. The atmosphere is livened up by bands playing Greek folk music, as well as by dance groups performing traditional dances. It goes without saying that residents and visitors alike join in, feasting till the early morning hours. Fireworks never fail to be part of celebrations in Koufonisia either, while the sight of the moon lighting up the hills of Keros creates a unique backdrop for this colorful event!
