The Cyclades Olive Museum in Andros, Greece: The Cyclades Olive Museum is a private museum located in the mountainous village of Ano Pitrofos, very close to Menites. This museum is housed in a traditional building that was bought and restored by civil engineer Dimitris Chelmis, originating from Pitrofos and personal guide to the museum.

The old oil mill that houses the museum is part of a two-floor building and occupies a large part of the ground floor (called katogi). The upper floor used to host the home of the owner. This fine example of animal-powered olive oil producing mill was very frequently met in the countryside of Andros island, operating until the 1960s.

The building of the Cyclades Olive Museum dates from earlier than 1857 and was probably operating during the 18th century. Its architectural elements, like arches and domes, are common in rural architecture of Andros and generally in the Cyclades islands. Until 1967 the oil mill stopped operating and until 1997 it was used as a storehouse.

That year, the entire building (oil mill and house) was bought by its present owner, Dimitris Chelmis, and it was later restored and transformed into a museum. Visitors can get a view of the traditional oil production method in Andros and learn a lot about the local culture. A video with an animal-powered olive oil production has been filmed in the museum and is screened to visitors.

A gem of a museum and a true highlight of our trip in the Cyclades! Don’t miss!
A year after our trip (which was in July 2023) my sons and husband and I still talk about the private tour we got from Mr. Dimitris Chelmis, the restorer and owner of this tiny gem - the Cyclades Olive Oil Museum of Andros. His tour was fascinating — active and engaging, with audience participation and excellent demonstrations and explanations of the various processes of olive oil production. We learned so much in just an hour here about the history of olive growing and olive oil production as an integral part of the island’s cultural life, and in a memorable, hands-on way. Mr. Chelmis has contributed in an important way to the preservation and teaching of a process that was, to countless past residents of the island, a way of life. He has honored their work with his research and restoration and presentation of this to those who want to glimpse this past. He is an incredibly knowledgeable and charming host, and he was so kindly accommodating when we (regrettably) had a little less time to spend there than his tour usually takes.
If you really want to get to understand the agrarian history of the Cyclades over the last century, and experience how traditional hand-pressed olive oil was made, visit this fantastic museum! Truly a highlight of our trip to the Greek islands.
