The Venetian harbor of Rethymno, situated right next to the modern harbor, is one of the most beautiful spots in the Old Town. The old Egyptian Lighthouse stands at the end of the preserved stone-built sea wall, dominating the area. It is thought to have been constructed sometime in the 1830s, during the Egyptian occupation of the island, on the site of an older Venetian lighthouse. Rising at a height of 9 meters, it is the second-largest surviving Egyptian lighthouse in Crete, after the lighthouse in Chania.
This imposing structure overlooks the scenic port, creating a beautiful picture and providing wonderful photo opportunities. Many visitors venture out to the site of the lighthouse, walking along the sea wall and taking in the enchanting scenery.
Those interested in visiting this spot should not miss out on doing so, especially during the late evening. As the sun begins to set you will witness a gorgeous silhouette of the lighthouse set against the background of the fiery sky. Then, as the night takes hold, the lighthouse will light up, with its warm colors contrasting the now-darkened sky.
