Rethymno Geropotamos beach

General information

Geropotamos Beach is located in a lovely cove 18 km east of Rethymno Town, beneath the Geropotamos Bridge. It was named after the river of the same name flowing in the area and into the sea. It is a quiet, tranquil area that doesn’t get very crowded.

The waters are crystalline and clean, but their depth makes them unsuitable for children. Because of the river, the temperature of the sea is pretty low, and it can also get wavy due to northern winds. The shore is mostly sandy but can be pebbly in some areas. It is partly organized, with a few umbrellas, sunbeds, and a canteen serving refreshing beverages and snacks. Nearby, you will also find several hotels and some taverns.

The region is home to rare birds and animals, with the most renowned one being the Monachus-Monachus seal, which lives in the cavities on the western side of Geropotamos. Due to its proximity to the National Highway leading to Heraklion, the beach is easily accessible by car.
