Lassithi Plaka

General information

Plaka is a traditional settlement located 16 km north of Agios Nikolaos and 5 km from the cosmopolitan Elounda resort. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the historic Spinalonga island, which served as a leper colony from the beginning till the middle of the 20th century, as it was probably created precisely for the transportation of supplies to the islet’s population.

After the leper colony closed down, Plaka gradually evolved into a quiet tourist resort with a few seaside taverns and accommodations. The surrounding area is of great natural beauty and provides the perfect setting for hiking expeditions. Around the village, you will also find numerous caves and pristine pebbly beaches with crystalline waters.

Plaka is a great starting point for exploring the nearby sights, such as the old windmills in Vrouchas village, the lighthouse on Cape Aforesmenos, and other picturesque villages like Neapolis and Milatos. What is more, water taxis run by a local boat cooperative depart for Spinalonga on a daily basis.
