Just 3 km from Sitia, one can find the Archaeological Site of Tripitos. Built on the top of a hill, the discovered settlements are dated from the Hellenistic period. Excavations unearthed a dockyard on the east side of the headland and walls for the protection of the city on the south side.
More buildings have been discovered, such as houses, rooms, storerooms, and military facilities, mirroring the lively everyday life of ancient Tripitos. One of the most important findings is a hall, at the center of which lies a hearth, possibly used for religious practices. The archaeologists have also reported the detection of clay pots, coins, jewels, and lead weights.
The visitor can wander around the city ruins and settlements, getting a taste of Crete’s vibrant past and rich history, while enjoying the breathtaking view from the top of the hill. The scenery is astonishing, as the ancient past teams up with the natural beauty of the area.
