Location: Sitia

Sitia Geopark is at the easternmost edge of Crete, a natural haven where landscapes untouched by human hands are preserved. This UNESCO-recognized Geopark is located in a mostly mountainous area, with the mountain range of Zakros dominating a lot of the terrain, and is perched right along the coastline.

The geology of Sitia Geopark is truly one of a kind, holding great historical significance. Mammal fossil sites are abundant throughout, dating back to the Pleistocene period, where fossils of extinct species such as the Deinotherium Giganteum were found. In addition, a great number of plant remnants from the Carboniferous Age and marine fossils have been discovered there through the years. Also of note are the extensive cave systems as well as the paleo-shorelines of Zakros, wholly unique to the island of Crete. Within the broader region, over 170 caves and many gorges have been recorded to date, further solidifying the rich value of this speleological park.

Sitia Geopark has implemented a series of helpful infrastructures to make the experience for its visitors as informative and convenient as possible. Information and route signs are present all around the park, informing visitors of each landmark’s history while also making the traversal of the park as easy as possible. On the seafront of Sitia town, the Sitia Geopark management and information bureau is available for any further assistance or inquiries.
