The magnificent Sarakinas Gorge is located at the southeast foot of Mount Dikti, about 6 km north of Myrtos village and close to the settlement of Mithi. According to Greek Mythology, the gorge was created after the giant Sarantapichos, the son of Zeus, stopped to drink water from the river of Myrtos. As he bent down, his lengthy beard slashed the mountain into two parts, thus forming the impressive gorge.
The gorge is only around 2 kilometers in length, however, it is considered one of the most beautiful hiking destinations on the island. Its width ranges from 3 to 10 meters and its imposing walls reach up to 150 meters in height. As you make your way through the gorge, you will experience a magical natural ambiance characterized by intricate rock formations, lush greenery, and a serene atmosphere. Stunning waterfalls and ponds are formed throughout this enchanting natural wonder, courtesy of the Kryopotamos River. During the winter, it is almost impossible to traverse the gorge without getting soaked by the large abundance of water.
To access Sarakinas Gorge, follow the main road from Ierapetra to Myrtos and continue for about 4 kilometers towards the village of Mithi. About 1 kilometer from there you will see a signpost indicating the direction of the gorge. Continuing along the path, it should only take a few minutes until you reach the entrance. Crossing Sarakinas Gorge is about a one-and-a-half-hour-long expedition, during which you will have to navigate some rugged terrain and climb up some big boulders. In certain areas, you will find some stone stairs and tree trunks that will aid you in traversing this natural treasure.
