General information

Located on the southern coast of Lassithi, in the area of Makris Gialos, Kalamokanias is a quiet beach with dark sand and crystalline sky-blue waters. It is separated from Makrigialos by the small promontory that lies next to the marina and is frequented mainly by the locals. The foundations of a Roman and a Minoan Villa can also be seen in the wider area of the settlement, within less than 500 meters from Kalamokanias.

The beach is not organized and is perfect for anyone wishing to relax away from large crowds. However, along the shore, there are some rental apartments, as well as a few taverns that cater to visitors’ needs.

Note: If you visit the area in the late summer, you might also be lucky enough to encounter impressive black-winged stilts, a species of migratory bird with tall red legs that resemble a small stork. At that time of the year, black-winged stilts often stop at the nearby streams, and it is believed that they have given the beach its name.
