General information

To the north of the renowned palm tree forest of Vai, visitors will find the area of Itanos (or Erimoupolis), which has been named after the ancient city that once stood there. Around the archaeological site of Itanos, there are three little coves, each boasting a lovely beach.

The first one you will see after parking your vehicle in the parking lot is the central beach of Erimoupolis, which stretches right after the archaeological site. Though it is mostly sandy, it gets rather rocky in places, so walking there without water shoes can be a challenge. To the south, there is another secluded beach, which boasts crystalline waters and a lush palm tree grove, while the northernmost one is the most beautiful, as well as the most popular of the three. Being bigger than the other two, it is known for its striking turquoise waters and fine golden sand. Though none of these beaches are organized, they are well worth a visit.

Bonus info: Erimoupolis Beach is part of the Sitia Geopark and presents some rock formations of particular interest. More specifically, there are some shales, siltstones and pelites with a variety of multi-colored folds, which look as if a sculptor had carved geometrical patterns on the stone!
