General information

Though most visitors to Makry Gialos head for the main beach stretching in front of the settlement, the area offers many other lovely and more quiet beaches too. One of them is Diaskari Beach, which lies just 3 kilometers east of the village.

Diaskari is a long beach with crystalline azure waters; though it is mostly sandy, swimmers need to watch their footing, as, at places, the sea bottom is covered by large flat stones that can be quite slippery. The beach is only partly organized, as there is one tavern that offers umbrellas and showers, as well as a few wooden canopies with hammocks. The eastern part of the beach, near the hill that separates Diaskari from the quiet Lagada Beach, is also often used for naturism.

Ruins from the Late Minoan era have also been discovered on top of this hill, and it is believed that the area used to boast a thriving port.
