General information

Agriomandra (or Agiomandra) Beach stands out for its turquoise crystal-clear waters and can be characterized as an escape from the bustling tourist hotspots that often get crowded. Located 25 km from Agios Nikolaos and 3 km from the village of Kavousi in Ierapetra, this hidden gem offers tranquility and captivates every visitor who seeks a peaceful retreat.

The name Agriomandra comes from the Greek words agrios which means wild and mandra, a place where animals are kept. During the Venetian period, it was used as a port. An observant eye can easily detect the Venetian remains around the shore. Until World War II, this small port, due to the absence of a road network, was often used by the locals mainly to transfer animals, olive oil, carob and other products to Agios Nikolaos.

Reaching Agriomandra Beach is part of the adventure. To begin with, you should follow a dirt road west of Kavousi village, known as Lakos Ambelion. This small path will lead you to a gorge. Crossing this gorge is the only way to access the beach and will take approximately 10 minutes. The scenic trail can be a bit challenging, but it is worth it. Just before reaching the beach, one will see several caves in the rocks; one is an old Byzantine church dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, while another was used by an eremite. A few meters away you will find the astonishing pristine Agriomanda beach with its green waters.

Because Agriomandra Beach is located in a secluded area, it is necessary to come prepared. Bring some water and sunscreen and wear comfortable sports shoes. Due to its challenging access, it’s better to visit it during the day.
