Heraklion Anissaras beach

General information

Anissaras Beach is located 24 km east of Heraklion and less than 4 km north of Hersonissos. The beach itself is made of coarse sand, yet the seafloor is quite rocky, which combines well with the clean waters to present a great location for snorkeling.

The beach is in front of a large complex of beach resorts and the locals have invested in it by offering extensive coverage of sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as showers and snack bars. At about the halfway point, one can find a pier that serves as a hub for watersport activities.
Access to the beach is primarily from the west, by disembarking where the road turns off towards Hersonissos and then walking along the sand. Despite its substantial development, visitors can still opt to forego the amenities provided by the hotels and enjoy the beach itself for free.

The highlight of the beach is located at the very eastern end, where one can find St. George Chapel standing on a rocky cape, as well as the remains of a small quarry, believed to have been in use during the Minoan and Venetian periods, that extended all the way to the islet opposite.
