The Kazantzakis Garden Theatre is located at the N. Kazantzakis and M. Hadjidakis Park, near the Jesus bastion of the Venetian Walls of Heraklion Town. The first time the park functioned as a small theater was during World War II. Until 1963, the place was used solely for political gatherings, while after 1963, efforts were made to establish an open-air theater.
In 1976, more changes were made and the theater took its current form, with as many as 1,200 seats and all the necessary amenities. It hosts a wide variety of performances, especially during festivals in summer. The events held here range from plays, concerts and dance shows to lectures, opera nights and art exhibitions.
At the same park, right next to the Kazantzakis Garden Theater, you will find another open-air venue called the Manos Hadjidakis Garden Theater.
