Located around 30 kilometers from Heraklion Town, Aposelemis Dam is the greatest water supply project ever carried out in Crete, covering the needs of residents along the northern coast of eastern Crete. Fed with water from the Lassithi Plateau and the wider basin of the Lagada district, it is the biggest artificial lake on the island and has evolved into a pole of attraction for locals and visitors alike.
Part of its appeal lies in the now-submerged Sfendili Village, which alternately emerges and disappears following the seasonal fluctuations of the water level. What makes it stand out, though, is that Aposelemis Dam has evolved into a highly significant wetland, which is home to a number of aquatic flora and fauna species. Especially during migration periods, it provides refuge to many different kinds of birds, while, from May to September, when the Cretan countryside is in full bloom, it houses over 28 butterfly species, some of which are endemic to Crete.
Thus, the dam is a place of impressive natural beauty, allowing visitors to get away from it all and reconnect with nature.
