The cathedral is located on a large square, right next to the small church of Saint Minas, which used to be the original Metropolis of Crete after the Ottoman Occupation. The building of the new church started in 1862 and was completed in 1895. The people of Heraklion participated with great eagerness in the construction of the edifice, with a three-day celebration taking place after its finalization, despite Crete still being under the rule of the Ottomans.
