General information

Treis Ekklisies is a secluded, seaside settlement located 65 km south of Heraklion Town. It was named after the three churches (tris ekklisies) that can be found in the region, dedicated to The Transfiguration of Christ, Saint George, and The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

In the settlement lies a lovely, large beach, surrounded by rocks and greenery. The shore is covered in coarse sand, and the water is crystal clear and deep, ideal for snorkeling. There are not many tourist facilities in the area, apart from a few cafes, taverns, and some rooms to let. Sunbeds and umbrellas are also not available since the beach is not organized.

Tris Ekklisies is situated between two enormous rocks, called Kolovrechtis and Bourouni. In fact, if you take a look at Bourouni from the eastern side of the beach, it resembles the face of a woman. According to a local myth, there once was a woman whose husband went to war and never came back. She used to sit on the rock every day, waiting for him to return, until she finally prayed to God to turn her to stone so that she would stay forever there and witness his arrival.
