General information

The Messara Valley is located in the south of Crete and is surrounded by large mountains and sea. It’s fertile, with many greenhouses and agricultural facilities. On the western side of the valley lies the Gulf of Messara.

The Messara Gulf is divided into many small beaches, including Komos, Kalamaki, Kokkinos Pyrgos, and the famous Matala Beach. The coast is covered in smooth golden sand and thin pebbles and boasts dazzling, crystal-clear waters. A few tourist facilities are also available there.

The Loggerhead turtles go to the shore every summer to lay their eggs, which is why the area must be protected and remain clean. At night, artificial lighting and fires are prohibited, as they make the babies lose their way and end up on the road instead of the sea.
