General information

Lygaria Beach is a sandy beach situated 23 km northwest of Heraklion Town. It has a lovely, narrow shore with calm, warm waters. It’s a really popular resort, thanks to the relaxing, tranquil atmosphere it provides.

The coast is clean, covered in coarse sand, and organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. The area is surrounded by lush hills, and, as a result, Lygaria is safe from the northern winds, which can sometimes hit the northern coast of Crete. There are plenty of facilities and amenities in the area, including many taverns, cafes, beach bars, and souvenir shops. There are also rooms and apartments available for rent near Lygaria.

    Nice relaxing beach
This is a very nice little beach with calm clear water.
The beach is quite narrow with tavernas lining the shore. It is far away from the main road so you are protected from the fumes and there is a free car park at one end of the beach.
A pair of sunbeds incl. an umbrella is 7 eur per day. The sunbeds are at a good distance from each other, so the beach does not get very crowded.
No watersports at the beach as far we could tell, but you can rent a canoe.
A big plus is also that there is a free mobile public toilet available which is not completely disgusting .

    Not great sea but quiet
We stayed in Agia Pelagia but didn't like the beach because it was too crowded. So, we decided to look for other beaches in the area with less yelly tourists, which was very difficult in the middle of August. However, we did found Lygaria, a couple of km from Agia Pelagia. The water was not the best but it was a nice, calm beach mostly with locals and nice, quiet taverns by the sea. I thought this beach was lovely and used to go there for three or four times on the row.
