General information

Loutra Beach is a charming shore 77 km south of Heraklion Town. It’s a secluded, quiet place, ideal for those who prefer to relax and avoid large crowds. In the area lies the Lentas harbor, next to which you will see some small, sandy coves.

The shore is covered in brown sand and fine pebbles, and the waters are calm, boasting a lovely azure color. It is not organized with tourist facilities, but you can enjoy the natural shade provided by the trees adorning the coast. Nearby, you will find some restaurants and taverns where you can taste delicious Cretan dishes, as well as a few rooms to rent for a pleasant stay.

Close to Loutra, you can visit a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, called Panagia Vithanos. It is built inside a cave, and water drops fall from the roof. According to a local myth, a shepherd found an icon of Mary in the area, which was then stolen. However, after a while, the shepherd revisited the place where he found the icon and discovered it was there again. To honor the Virgin Mary for the miracle, he decided to build this chapel and dedicate it to her.
