General information

Komos is a long, sandy beach located 67 km southwest of Heraklion Town. In Minoan times, Komos was a flourishing port under the control of the palatial center of Phaistos and the area has been declared an archaeological site. As a result, there are hardly any tourist facilities and the beach is not very crowded. The seashore is ideal for sunbathing and the azure waters are clean and shallow.

Komos Beach stretches around 2 kilometers and is lined with tamarisks and high rocks that provide excellent sea views. The southern part of the beach, which stretches right in front of the archaeological site, is partly organized, with some umbrellas, sunbeds and showers. At that point, you will also find a cantine and a lifeguard. The northern part of the beach, commonly known as Potamos, is not organized and has been a popular spot for nudism ever since the time of the hippies. If you want to do some water sports and find taverns or accommodation, just walk to the south, to the beach of Matala, which is a highly developed tourist resort.

Komos is also significant from an ecological point of view, as it is one of the beaches where the Caretta Caretta sea turtles come to lay their eggs. Visitors should make sure they do not disturb them and avoid visiting the beach at nighttime.
