General information

Kokkinos Pyrgos Beach is located 63 km southwest of Heraklion Town, close to Tymbaki. The beach has been named after a tower built with reddish dust that used to stand there in the past. It is an organized sandy shore with shallow waters, which are frequently affected by winds known as meltemia.
This beach is mostly famous for the Caretta Caretta sea turtles that come here to lay their eggs during the summer months.

Kokkinos Pyrgos actually consists of two different beaches separated by a small fishing port. The eastern part, from the port to the Tymbaki military airport, is called Katalyki, while the western part, which stretches as far as Agia Galini, is known as Makrymaliana or Kakoskalo.

In close distance to Kokkinos Pyrgos, visitors can find some fish taverns and rooms to rent.
