General information

In south Crete, only 1.5 km from the renowned Matala, lies Kokkini Ammos Beach, a seashore that will take your breath away. Located in a secluded area away from tourist hotspots, it is a haven for unlimited relaxation, swimming, snorkeling and exploring. Framed by rugged cliffs and rocky scenery, the scarce vegetation teams up with the virgin beauty of the crystal-clear turquoise waters, while the surrounding rocks change color according to daylight. A perfect place for nature lovers, Kokkini Ammos is named after its distinctive reddish-blonde sand.
Known as one of the best nudist beaches, it became more popular during the 60s and 70s, when hippies "conquered" the nearby Matala.

Apart from swimming, one can easily explore the nearby majestic scenery. Should you walk along the shore, you can find Theosinis Rock, which offers an astonishing panoramic view of the Libyan Sea. Part of Kokkini Ammos’s cultural past, is the characteristic sculptures made from stone, rock, or sand that can be detected across the beach, a trend inspired by a Belgian lover of Crete, many years ago.

Due to its secluded character, it is wise to bring some necessary supplies, such as cool water, snacks and sunscreen. Even though there are some available umbrellas, we recommend bringing your own, as the shady spots are rare.

Approaching Kokkini Ammos is part of the adventure. Located 1.5 km meters away from Matala, the beach is only accessible via a dirt road. Follow the nearby signs, climb a small hill and begin the descent. The whole process lasts for approximately 15 minutes and can be challenging at times. As a result, it is necessary to wear comfortable sports shoes.
