General information

Dermatos is a long, secluded beach that hides at the mouth of the Anapodari, the longest river in Crete. It is located on Crete’s southern coast, between the more developed beaches at Tsoutsouros and Keratokambos, 43 kilometers southeast of Heraklion Town.

The vicinity of Dermatos is sparsely populated and has found a way to remain off the beaten track. Most villages around here are home to fewer than 100 people, which altogether makes for a very quiet environment that is extremely conducive for free camping.

The beach is completely unorganized and, unlike its neighboring coasts, doesn’t have any accommodations nearby. The village of Dermatos, 300 meters from the coast, includes nothing but a handful of farmhouses.
The coast and the seabed are pebbly to the east and sandy to the west, and the water is generally cold, due to the nearby river.
