General information

Arena Beach is located 10 kilometers east of Heraklion and is in effect the first beach one comes across that is properly removed from the city’s urban development.
It is a completely sandy beach, with shallow, teal waters, and is essentially split in three: on the east of the coast sits a large beach resort, while the western end is home to a number of beach bars, which offer plenty of sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, and even a beach volley court. The middle section, however, is completely unorganized.

Due to the northern winds that blow upon the shore here, watersports are very popular, with SUP and kitesurfing especially prevalent.

It is surrounded mostly by virgin hillsides, showcasing northern Crete’s typically Greek climate. The drive from Heraklion Town takes about 15 minutes, but drivers must remember to get off the motorway and onto the old national road no later than at Amnissos.
KTEL Heraklio-Lasithi offers daily buses to Kokkini Hani and beyond, which can make a stop at Arena.
