The Cavafy Archive comprises over 2,000 items, including manuscripts of poems, hand-compiled printed editions, prose literary works, correspondence, and personal items. This extensive collection provides invaluable insights into Cavafy’s creative process and personal life.

Constantine P. Cavafy (1863 – 1933) was an influential Greek poet whose work has left an indelible mark on modern Greek literature. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Cavafy spent a significant part of his life there, crafting poems that delved into historical and philosophical themes, often reflecting on the Hellenistic era. His unique style and introspective approach have garnered international acclaim.

The Onassis Foundation, recognizing the cultural significance of Cavafy’s work, acquired the archive and established a dedicated space to house it. The foundation’s mission includes providing free and open access to researchers and the general public, promoting Cavafy’s work, and highlighting the international character of his poetry through digitization and comprehensive documentation.

The archive is housed in a neoclassical building constructed in 1910, known for its eclectic architecture dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. The building has been meticulously preserved, seamlessly integrating into its Plaka surroundings.
The interior is thoughtfully designed to accommodate various cultural activities. The ground floor is specially arranged to display Cavafy’s objects, including authentic furniture and decorative objects transported from Alexandria. The space is divided into three accessible rooms: one exhibiting Cavafy’s personal items, another showcasing his manuscripts and letters, and a third dedicated to his library and artwork related to him.

Since its opening, the Cavafy Archive has become a focal point for literary scholars, historians, and poetry enthusiasts. It serves as a hub for research and education, offering insights into Cavafy’s methodologies and the historical context of his work.
