Athens Paleo Faliro

General information

Paleo Faliro, like any other neighborhood in Athens, has a unique and rich history connected with ancient Greece, while maintaining its own identity. It was established in ancient Greek times by Faliros, a local hero of royal descent, and it has not changed its limits since. Plato, an important figure in the city's ancient history, has mentioned Faliro in many of his writings, and Demosthenes, a scholar and politician of the 4th century BC, would often visit the area's beach during harsh rainfall to test his own limits in extreme weather conditions.

The area became an autonomous municipality of Athens in 1961, and because of its popularity among the upper class of Greece during the 40s, it became a location where the wealthy residents of Athens would often build their summer houses, something that is still in effect today.
Faliro has its own marina, named Flisvos Marina, where some of the most modern yachts are moored. The Planetarium of Athens is also located in the area, offering a unique opportunity for state-of-the-art interactive education, while the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Foundation Center also lies in proximity.

Another important building is the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex (Tae Kwon Do). This indoor stadium was used during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens for the sports of Handball and Tae Kwon Do, hence its unofficial name. Nowadays it hosts all kinds of festivals and events while being able to accommodate more than 4.000 spectators.
