More information about Exarchia
Exarchia started developing in the late 19th century and was named after the owner of an old local store.
From the 1960s to the 1970s, Exarchia used to be the cultural hub of the city, since many renowned Greek artists, poets and writers used to live there.
Gradually, the area started to gain a bad reputation, having been the center of many political conflicts and protests.
With the establishment of restaurants, bars and clubs, the area started becoming more fashionable and a popular meeting point, especially among young people.
Small restaurants with live Greek music known as mezedopolia are hidden in the narrow streets of Exarchia and they are among the best places to enjoy the folk music of Athens.
Underground bars and nightclubs for all music tastes can also be discovered here, making the area popular for its intense nightlife.
You will also discover all kinds of shops, for gadgets, books, antiques and vintage clothing.
The most impressive place of interest in Exarchia is the National Archaeological Museum.
