The beautiful green island of Skiathos is home to several churches and monasteries which charm all visitors the first sight. Most of them are built at the most fascinating locations of Skiathos while others can be seen along the seafront. Of unique interest is the Cathedral church of Three Bishops that dominates Chora, home to precious relics and the miraculous icon of Panagia Kounistra, the saint protector of Skiathos.
The Monastery of Evagelistria is the only one that is presently active in Skiathos. It lies surrounded by lush vegetation and trees, only 5 km from Chora. It was built by some monks, during the post-Byzantine years over the ruins of an ancient monastery and the holy complex comprises a fine library with rare books, an ecclesiastical museum, and numerous cells.
The monastery of Panagia Kounistra is also dedicated to the Holy Virgin. It lies in the middle of a pine forest, about 13 km from Skiathos town, on the way to Aselinos village. The 17th-century monastery has a great significance in the religious life of the locals.
The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is located amidst a vegetated area. It was built in the early 19th century and has great historical importance for the island, as it contributed to the Greek War of Independence.
The Monastery of Panagia Ikonistra (or Kounistra) is located in a mountainous area of lush greenery. Built in the 17th century, this church is the protector of Skiathos. The katholicon has nice frescoes of the 18th century.
The church of the Three Bishops is the Cathedral of Skiathos Town. It was constructed in 1846 and it has a tall bell tower. Some beautiful icons are housed in this church.
The Church of Taxiarches is a charming religious site in proximity to the more imposing Church of Evangelistria, lying amidst a beautiful lush landscape.
In excellent condition to this day, the abandoned Monastery of Agios Charalambos offers enthralling views of the surrounding green landscapes and the glistening waters of the Aegean.
This church was founded after the Greek Revolution of 1821 by inhabitants who originated from the area of Limni in Evia. It houses religious relics, frescoes, and the beautiful icon of the Nativity of Mary.
