Kythira island is a beautiful island located near the southern part of Peloponnese. Kythira (or Kythera) stands out for its Medieval architecture, secluded beaches and wonderful natural setting.

The most touristy places in Kythira are Avlemonas, Agia Pelagia, Chora and Kapsali.
Nevertheless, if you fancy some more secluded places to explore, a drive around the island will bring you to cliff-top villages, abandoned places, hidden beaches, and monasteries. You’re going to discover many surprises!

One of the most iconic sites to visit is the Venetian Castle above Chora, the island’s capital. This castle boasts a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and the southern coasts of Peloponnese, so it makes a great spot to watch the sun going down.

In addition to the Medieval Castle, don’t miss to visit the monasteries of Agia Moni, Agia Elesa and Myrtidiotissa, as well as the church inside the cave of Agia Sofia. They will steal your breath with their beauty!

  • Chora
    With an intense Venetian style and a strong castle on top, Chora is a lovely village to stroll around in Kythira. This is the capital of the island.
  • Kapsali beach
    Kapsali is the most tourist place in Kythira. It has a large beach with crystal, shallow water and lined up with hotels and taverns.
  • Venetian Castle
    On the highest spot of Chora is an imposing Venetian Castle that dates from the 12th century. Its location gives wonderful view to the Aegean Sea.
  • Kaladi beach
    Kaladi beach is a pure marvel that every tourist should seek in Kythira. It is located 15 km north of Chora, the island's capital and close to Paleopolis.
  • Halkos beach
    Most beaches in Kythira are secluded and accessible through a track road. Such a beautiful unorganized beach is Halkos, with amazing waters and total privacy.
  • Waterfalls
    The “Neraida” or “Fonissa” waterfall is situated among huge plane trees and the sparkling waters falling from a height of 20 meters form a small green pond ideal for swimming.
  • Cave of Agia Sofia
    The cave of Agia Sofia was named after the small white chapel constructed inside. It is located between the villages of Kapsali and Mylopotamos, in southern Kythira.
  • Paleochora ghost village
    Located on the northern side of the island, Paleochora is today an abandoned village. It was totally burnt down by pirates in the Medieval times.
  • Castle of Mylopotamos
    The castle is actually a medieval settlement which was inhabited until the 1950’s. It is also named “Kato Hora ” and is very interesting, as many buildings are preserved in relatively good condition.
