laris 20 Dec 2009Gorgeous villages on the southCorfu is a beautiful island that becomes more and more exciting as you get to know it better. I would definitely suggest a visit to village Benitses! We took the bus number 6 from the Town to Benitses, gets you there easily and fast. Benitses is a fishing village full with contrasts, since it mixes mountain and sea, fishing village and tourist resort, traditional houses and modern hotel buildings.
Another fact about Benitses, which seemed quite tourist crowded in August, is the big number of Italian tourists. Even if you are not the type of tourist that visits museums, you definitively need to visit the Sea Museum in Benitses. The ticket costs 4 euros, not that expensive in my opinion, especially considering that this is the biggest Sea Museum in Europe. The museum has many thousands of impressive and rare species of shells, corals and sharks! The exhibits are coming from all over the world, with many species from the Indian, Pacific and Mediterranean Sea. There are many available souvenirs at the exit, along with shells for collectors. Nice place and fun to visit.
You will find many ohter beautiful villages too all over Corfuand mostly in the southern side. The best beaches for me were located on the north and the best villlages on the south. Agioi Deka and Agios Mathias were great among their lush greenery. If you walk a bit in the forest of Agios Mathias, you will see a nice tavern on top of a hill. Excellent food and the best view, even better than Paleokastritsa!

todlef34 22 Jul 2008Fine village but very crowdedBenitses is a very noisy and crowded tourist resort. Most Italian tourists go there, in contrast to the English who prefer north Corfu and the Greeks who mostly stay at Gouvia. Anyway, the village itself is fine, very picturesque. With white houses and old people, paved streets and traditional groceries. The beach is fine, but you will certainly find better beaches on Corfu. If you go to Benitses, there are two things you must do: eat at the taverns in the waterfront and certainly go to the sea museum. Do not forget that the majestic Achilleion Palace is also closeby.
