Kos Zia

General information

Built on the slopes of Mount Dikeos, Zia is an enchanting little village renowned for its stunning sunsets, authentic taverns and picturesque alleys. Located 15 kilometers southwest of Kos Town, close to Asfendiou, it is one of Kos’ most popular day-trip destinations.

Zia has retained its traditional insular architecture, with quaint houses in which the white of the walls contrasts with the bright blue of the doors and windows. Walking around the narrow streets, one will find a plethora of shops selling traditional products, as well as numerous taverns that attract locals and visitors alike thanks to their delicious authentic recipes.

The winding alleys soon lead to two traditional watermills, that of Ioannis Chatzantonis and that of Kassios, which have been declared listed monuments. Today, one of them has been restored and exhibits tools and other everyday objects used by the locals in the previous centuries.

Nestled among the rocks, visitors will come across the church of Saint John the Theologian, while a chapel dedicated to the Prophet Elias also stands on a low hill. For those who feel up to it, the walk up to the top of Mount Dikeos and the church of Christ is truly rewarding, as it affords magnificent views of the entire Kos, the nearby islands of Kalymnos, Pserimos and Nisyros, and even the coasts of Asia Minor. However, the path is somewhat tricky, so it should not be attempted in the dark.

The route that leads directly to the settlement crosses some of the most beautiful spots on the island, being surrounded by olive groves and lush pines, cypresses, oaks and gurgling mountain streams. In fact, in the surrounding area, it is possible to find the Kos Natural Park, a forest sanctuary that offers the ultimate sunset experience. In this hidden gem of Zia, nature enthusiasts can hike along charming trails, observe the local flora and fauna and enjoy a refreshment in the midst of this idyllic landscape.
