Kos Kefalos

General information

Kefalos is a picturesque village 40 kilometers southwest of Kos Town and around 17 kilometers from the Kos International Airport. It is divided into two parts, the old settlement on top of a hill, and the newer, coastal one, which is called Kamari and boasts a small fishing port.

In ancient times, Kefalos used to be called Astypalea and was the island’s capital city till 366 BC. The remnants of the ancient city can be found around 3 kilometers from the present-day village, in the area of Palatia, and include a 5th-century temple dedicated to the goddess Demeter, a Hellenistic theater, a Doric temple and the church of Panagia Palatiani. The wider area has also yielded significant archaeological findings, as traces of human activity from the Neolithic times have been discovered inside the White Stone Cave (Aspri Petra in Greek).

More about Kefalos

The old settlement has retained its traditional architectural features, with whitewashed houses built close to one another, forming a labyrinth of narrow alleys. On the other hand, Kamari has a plethora of nice restaurants, cafes, bars and other shops. Opposite the port, lies the rocky Kastri islet with the quaint chapel of Agios Nikolaos, one of the most photogenic sights in Kos. Other things to see include the ruins of Kefalos Castle on a rocky hill east of the village, as well as the Paleo-Christian basilicas of Saint Stephen.

Overall, the village has well-developed tourist infrastructure, with plenty of accommodations, without losing its authentic character. It is also renowned for the crystalline waters of its many beaches, which are often awarded a Blue Flag and rank among the very best on the entire island. At the same time, boats regularly depart from Kamari port for the nearby islands of Nisyros and Kalymnos, which are great for a day-trip.
