Kos Mastihari beach

General information

Mastihari Beach is located about 21 km southwest of Kos Town and 5 km north of Antimachia, in the homonymous Mastihari resort. The beach stretches for 5 km and boasts white sand and emerald waters, creating the ultimate exotic atmosphere.

At the center of the beach, you will find plenty of colorful sunbeds and umbrellas as well as some water sports facilities. Mastihari is included in the areas with the highest wind probability on the island, which often leads to some impressive waves and has made the beach a popular destination among wind- and kitesurfing enthusiasts However, because of their choppiness, the waters may not always be ideal for swimming. A long tuft of trees lies in the surrounding area and provides an excellent spot for some cool shade.

The settlement of Mastihari lies around the natural bay and features plenty of tourist amenities including accommodations, restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. It is usually busy during the day. The little port of the village offers daily connections to Kalymnos.

    Never feel packed
This was my third time on the row that I visited Kos. The first was in 2007 for 3 days as island-hopping from Rhodes, the second in 2008 for a week, the third in 2009 for two weeks... and hopefully sometimes for permanent!!

Out of all the Greek islands we have seen, Kos is our favourite. We are even thinking of retiring and moving there in the future, if everything goes according to the plans...

Mastihari is the place we always stay, for the nice hotel we have found and the beautiful beach. Also as I like windsurfing, this is probably the only place in Kos to practise at your comfort. Although Mastihari is a popular resort on the island, suprisingly you never feel packed.

Taverns by the beach are delicious. Try Vaggos for the best fish and Yannakis for the good red wine. Rent a car for a couple of days and make a tour of the island. You will discover places full on tourists, like Kardamena, and other spots totally untouched, villages hidden up in the mountains and lovely cottages here and there.

Last time in Kos, we took the daily boat from Kos Town to Bodrum, an organized tourist resort in Turkey. Good recommendation to see other places at once!

    Good winds for surfing
From all the beaches on Kos, I enjoyed Mastichari the most. We stayed 10 days on the island, so we had plenty of time to see many beaches and villages, but Mastichari seemed the best to me. People were younger, beach bars played loud music (without the craze and noise of Kardamena!!) and you can windsurf there because winds are very strong in the afternoon. Windsurfing is my favourite activity in summer and most Aegean islands are good for that.

    Great beach bars
Our base was Antimachia, where we stayed in a lovely studio for four. So Mastichari was the beach we frequently visited and enjoyed the most! It had some umbrellas but you had to go early in the morning to get one. I loved Tamtam, it is a funny and lively beach bar you shouldn't miss. It plays music all day and Giannis, the sweet bar tender, makes great Cosmopolitan! The sea in Mastichari is nice and refreshing. Very easy to go, especially if you have a car because the road is safe.
