Santorini Megalochori

General information

Megalochori in Santorini is one of the most traditional villages of Santorini.
It lies on a hill and is characterized as a labyrinth of steep alleys and streets. Unaffected by mass tourism, Megalochori retains its wonderful architecture. It comprises a beautiful blend of white Cycladic houses, old churches, and narrow alleys, witnessing the strong Aegean tradition.

Houses were built in order to protect citizens from pirate rapines, which explains their high walls/fences, firm wooden doors, and inner courtyards. The quaint main square boasts eating establishments and cafes where you can sit and sip your coffee or enjoy a snack among locals under the shade of the trees. Lovely small churches are dispersed across the village, while Agios Nikolaos chapel, situated into the caldera's wall and offering unparalleled scenery views, lies adjacent to Megalochori.

More about Megalochori

The uncountable vineyards which extend beyond the countryside offer a magnificent setting and some of the most famous wines of Santorini. Megalochori is definitely a place to experience the rich wine tradition in some of the wineries open to the public. Those will allow you to expand your knowledge of wine's history and production and also try ambrosial volcanic varieties.

Culturally wise, travelers can also pay a visit to the Symposion and the Lost Atlantis museum.

Last but not least, two secluded beaches of Santorini are accessible on foot from Megalochori. Plaka and Thermi are two striking remote shores boasting therapeutic waters originating from regional hot springs.
