Kythnos Merichas

General information

Merichas is a small seaside village built around a bay, which explains why it hosts the island's port. It is located on the west coast of the island, 8 km from Chora and 12 km from the number one beach of Kythnos, Kolona.

The village has a few permanent residents (around 350 in particular) and has maintained its traditional appearance throughout the years, despite the increasing Kythnos's appeal towards tourists.

During summer, the settlement becomes busy due to the arriving ferries and the water taxis starting from the port. Merichas is home to quite a few accommodation options for those who want to stay near the port and sea. It also offers places to eat; you will have the chance to enjoy fresh fish and seafood in the numerous taverns while sitting at a table almost on the water's edge. Some bars and shops are found there as well.

Concerning sightseeing, Merichas is close to the archaeological site of Vryokastro, the ancient capital of the island, with ruins of walls, temples, altars and Roman buildings, and the church of Panagia Flampouriani.

Last but not least, all local buses start from Merichas and reach Chora, Driopida, Loutra, and Kanala. Bus timetables can be seen at the Info Kiosk right outside the port.
