Heraklion Moires

General information

Moires is a modern settlement situated 50 km southwest of Heraklion Town, in the plain of Messara. It’s an important commercial center with a huge park just outside the village, full of verdant trees, paved paths, beautiful fountains, and kiosks. The inhabitants are mostly occupied with agriculture, trade, and tourism.

The village's name comes from the Greek word for portions. It was named after the portions of land that were given to those who came to inhabit the village from the Peloponnese after the latter was occupied by the Turks. They settled there in 1543 and were the first inhabitants of the village. After 1900, an increase in population took place, and after 1930, the village became the biggest commercial, administrative, and religious center of the Messara Region.

At Moires, you can find some delightful family-owned taverns and a few charming cafes. Delicious specialties such as antikristo (barbecued lamb) and other savory home-like dishes cooked with quality local ingredients await you to taste. There is also an excellent place in the village where you can enjoy delicious falafels.
