Basilica di San Marco

Standing opposite the Morosini Lions fountain in Elefterios Venizelos square, the Basilica of San Marco is one of the greatest Venetian monuments of Heraklion. It was built in 1239 in the Gothic style, and extensive renovation works have restored it to its original form. Today it houses the town’s Municipal Art Gallery.

Paleokastro Fortress once stood tall over the bay below, protecting the city of Heraklion from Ottoman incursions. Its three-tiered structure, designed to overcome the unusual terrain on which it was built, is still preserved today.

A well-preserved temple that was the center of Gortyn’s religious activity over 12 centuries, the Temple of Apollo preserves traces of Archaic, Hellenistic, and Roman architecture. Notable for its intact altar and pavement, the temple walls hold a 2200-year-old peace treaty inscribed in stone.
